Rehabilitation TrainingBAB Rehab Team consists of a number of qualified Rehabilitation Officers, who have under gone several years of intensive training in visual impairment. Two of our Rehab Officers are visually impaired themselves. The Rehabs visit visually impaired people in their homes to assess what can be done to keep them independent. This service is available to anyone living in the Bucks County Council area and to anyone under the age of 18 and living in Milton Keynes. The Rehabs can teach communications skills such as braille, touch-typing or handwriting with the help of special aids. They also teach mobility which might include long white cane skills, bus travel and routes to places such as shops or work. Another main skill that Rehabs teach is daily living skills, which range from cooking to cleaning. We also have trained Rehabs that can teach mobility to visually impaired school children both in schools and at home. Our Rehab Team can advise on magnifiers and provides training on a wide range of specialist equipment which ranges from felt tip pens to microwave ovens that talk, and on to computers that talk and read books to you. The resource centre is run by a Rehab Officer who can spend time with individuals finding out what equipment might help them, then demonstrating the equipment. We also have a team of Community Workers who help people with more complex needs; this can be almost anything from help with shopping to helping in sorting out issues with housing. The Community Workers get the BAB member they look after to become as independent as possible and then a BAB volunteer continues the support. The Rehab Team work closely with the BAB volunteers which means that all of BAB's resources are used effectively. | ||
